You need some resources to produrece buildings, soldiers and researches.
These resources are  Gold,  Wood,  Stone and  Iron.
To keep growing your kingdom, you must first upgrade your resource producing buildings. Like every other buildings in the game, resource producing buildings need Wood and Stone to get upgraded too. Gold and Iron is mostly used for improving your technology.
